In recent news, former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has made headlines by defending the controversial Public-Private Partnership (PPP) deal involving the Indian conglomerate Adani Group. The deal, which concerns the modernization of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), has sparked mixed reactions across Kenya.

Odinga voiced his support for the Adani Group, emphasizing the company's successful track record in infrastructure projects in India. He mentioned his firsthand experience during a visit to Gujarat, where Adani transformed a swamp into a thriving port and industrial hub.

According to Odinga, such partnerships are vital for Kenya, which faces significant financial challenges that make infrastructure improvements difficult without private investment. He believes the deal could position Kenya to compete with neighboring countries in terms of infrastructure development.

Despite Odinga's endorsement, many Kenyans have expressed concerns about the transparency of the process. Critics argue that the leasing of JKIA, a major national asset, to a private foreign company could have long-term implications for the country’s economy and workforce. Concerns have also been raised about job security and the fairness of the deal, with some accusing Odinga of siding with corporate interests over the public. Odinga responded by urging the government to ensure that PPP processes are transparent and protect national interests.

He highlighted the importance of addressing public concerns to maintain Kenya’s attractiveness for future investments. He also warned that mishandling such projects could stall the country's development for years to come. The deal is still under heavy scrutiny, with legal challenges raised by groups like the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), questioning whether it truly benefits the country or prioritizes foreign interests over local welfare.
